An “apple a day” gift adapted for the pandemic

If you are anything like me, you are not only stress-eating, but you are also stress-baking.

Cookies, cakes, pies, you name it, I’m baking it. And the more sugar in the recipe, the better.

After pulling the last pie out of the oven, I knew I needed to give it away instead of having it around the house for me to consume whenever I fancied.

So, I adapted the simple concept of ‘an apple a day to keep the doctor away’ into a little sweet treat for my friends, family, neighbors and teachers (come the fall).

I sliced up the pie, placed a few pieces into my favorite to-go containers, tied these gift tags onto the containers with baker’s twine and started dropping these puppies off.

Apple Pie Fixes Everything

If you read my recent post describing my shot in the dark chocolate gift, then you already know that I like to use sweet treats as gifts – homemade or otherwise.

You don’t have to actually bake the pie yourself to give this gift.

You could support a local small business and order an apple pie from your favorite mom-and-pop bakery. Or, you could grab an apple pie from the bakery department of your grocery store as to cut-down on the number of times you are out and about.

OR you could make your own apple pie, like I did.

I used the recipe for Dutch Apple Pie found at sixsistersstuff.com.

It was the first time I made this pie. And holy cow, was it good! If you have never had an apple pie with an oatmeal cookie crust, MAKE THIS TODAY! You will not be disappointed!

I can’t help but think surprise desserts add cheer to any situation.

I know these stay-at-home orders are starting to really wear on everyone’s spirits. So why not spread some love by leaving a sweet porch present for friends, family and neighbors?

Post Shut-down Update

Since I originally wrote this post, stay-at-home orders due to the pandemic have lifted here in Illinois, and we are currently counting down the days until the start of school. With all this uncertainty, I’m thinking of turning this ‘just because’ gift into a teacher gift for the first day of school.

There’s nothing like starting the school year off with a fresh backed apple pie, am I right? Not that I’m buttering my kids’ teachers up or anything…

Not a Pie Person?

I know it’s hard to believe, but I guess there really are people out there that don’t like pie. So if you know your recipient wouldn’t enjoy a slice, you can easily swap it out for any of the apple ideas listed below.

Try pairing the apple a day gift tag with:

  • Muffins (like these shown below!!)
  • Cookies (like these shown below!!)
  • Turnovers
  • Fritters
  • Cider
  • Cider donuts
  • Apples and caramel dip

My Favorite Apple Muffin Recipe

My favorite apple muffin recipe is from Mel at Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. I can say that without a doubt, anyone would be happy to receive these spiced apple muffins as a gift.

After heading to our local orchard and picking of a pint of fresh apple cider, I whipped up a batch with the sole intention of giving them all away. To make the gifts extra special, I modified the previous gift tag (that was more apple pie themed) and made a muffin version.

If you’ve like to give these apple muffins – or your own favorite – quickly download my free gift tag below, and you’ll have a complete gift sure to please!

My Favorite Apple Cookie Recipe

I dare you to find someone who doesn’t love these apple butter cookies! They remind me a lot of a coveted snickerdoodle recipe my grandmother used to make, but with a subtle warm spiciness running through it. They are so good in the fall! Anyone you give these apple butter cookies to will be a friend for life!

One More Variation to Consider

And you know I love a good mixed drink gift basket, so you could do something fun and gather the ingredients for an appletini, assemble it in a basket and include this gift tag with it.
