What is Christmas in July?
Can you believe this? Apparently I’m a know-it-all American who thinks the origins of just about everything start in the U.S.? Weird, huh?
But it turns out I was wrong!
It turns out that Christmas in July – though celebrated in the U.S. – was actually a way for people in the Southern Hemisphere to experience Christmas celebrations during their coldest month – much the same way as most of us do in the Northern Hemisphere.
Why do we celebrate Christmas in July?
The grass is always greener on the other side, right?
Southern hemisphere countries (such as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa) December 25th falls during their summer season. Choosing to celebrate in July (their winter) allows them to experience the holiday as the northern hemisphere does.
As for the Northern Hemisphere? Well, it’s a twist on the typical cold Christmas season to celebrate during the warm summer months (for countries like the US, UK and Canada).
Also for us Americans, there isn’t a lot to celebrate after July 4th, so why not find another excuse to throw a party and give gifts?
Why do we celebrate Christmas in July vs. Christmas in June?
As I readily admit, I mistakenly thought Christmas in July was merely celebrating the 1/2 way point to Christmas. So I was always confused by why it was celebrated in July vs. June (which would mark the true 1/2 way point – not July).
Once I understood that Christmas in July is predominantly celebrated in the southern hemisphere as a way to experience a cozy Christmas during their coldest month of winter, it made a whole lot more sense!
So you see, Christmas in July isn’t about the 1/2 way to Christmas Day at all – it’s about celebrating the magic of a white Christmas, just like in the movies.
My Favorite Cookies to Make for Christmas in July Gifts
For us in the northern hemisphere, Christmas cookies in July are such a surprise!
I mean, what nut-job thinks about Christmas cookies in the summer? That is, besides me?
What I love most about the cookies I chose for this year’s Christmas in July gift boxes is that these cookies don’t scream CHRISTMAS at all!
Admittedly, these are Italian Christmas Cookies, but to most people, they look like colorful and cheerful cake-y and pillow-y sugar cookies.
And they are damn delicious! For the recipe, head over to Swanky Recipes. You’ll love them – I promise!

You can easily wrap Christmas in July gifts with leftover Christmas tins you have on hand. But may I suggest (for my northern hemisphere friends specifically), tucking your sweet treats into my favorite 8″ x 8″ brown bakery boxes and adding my FREE Christmas in July gift tag?
