A Halloween Tradition in the Making

Growing up, we lived next door to the sweetest couple. They had grown children of their own but no grandchildren. Over the years, Fannie and Emmett became like grandparents to us. My sister and I used to go over to their house all the time to watch Wheel of Fortune with them, bake cookies or bang around on their self-playing organ.

Every year Fannie would bake our birthday cakes (she was an awesome Cicilian baker), ricotta Easter pie and Christmas heavenly hash. But Halloween was our favorite – she’s hand out special goody bags with little homemade treats. It was always a surprise and always delicious.

So Much More Than Just Candy

This year, I wanted to do a take on Fannie’s Halloween goody bags. Instead of filling the bags with goodies I made myself, I put together an activity of sorts for my favorite kiddos and their parents.

Sometimes it’s just nice to have activities you can do with your child with ZERO effort on your part. No prep, no forethought required, just a fun few minutes making a festive treat with your child.

So here is this year’s goody bag: a DIY Witches’ Hat Halloween Cookie Goody Bag: a fun little kit with all of the things you’d need to make the cutest little witches’ hat cookies.

STEP 1: GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES

STEP 2: DOWNLOAD DIRECTIONS AND GIFT TAGS

I included directions with the cookies, candy and frosting so the kids (and parents) would know what to do. The kids I plan to give these goody bags to are quite young (3-4 years old) and may need some parental supervision and assistance with reading the directions.

I made sure to include photos of each step on the direction card so the kids too young to read could still follow along.

To include my FREE direction card, download it here and print it to card stock.

To stay consistent with the witches’ hat theme, I made a matching gift tag for each bag. You can download my tag for FREE and use it for any Halloween gift – witch-themed or not!

STEP 3: ASSEMBLE YOUR GOODY BAGS

(1) Wrap 10-12 cookies tightly in a clear cellophane goody bag to keep the air out and ensure freshness.

(2) Add the same amount of Hershey’s Kisses (or a few extra in case some “disappear” during assembly) in another cellophane bag.

(3) Place the wrapped cookies into the bag of Kisses and nestle in a tube of orange icing.

(4) Print the direction card and the gift tag.

(5) Add the directions card into the bag with the rest of the supplies

(6) Tie the bag closed using your Halloween ribbon and add the gift tag.

(7) Wait for your favorite neighborhood kids to come trick-or-treating!

  • Love love love this! I’m not a huge Halloween fan and have been wanting to do something different for our neighborhood kiddos. I think I need these goodie bags in my life this year!

    • I’m so glad you like them, Suzi! Hopefully the downloads for the directions and tags make it easy for you to put the little bags together! Colin loved this activity, but I think he liked eating the Hershey’s Kisses most of all!
