Personalized Mardi Gras Wine Tumbler {Tutorial}

Personalized Mardi Gras Wine Tumbler {Tutorial}

Never worry about spilled beverages at Mardi Gras again! Take the anxiety out of parade watching and make a personalized Mardi Gras wine tumbler (or two)! They make a great gift!

Oooh Mardi Gras, how I love you! I especially love you this year because the Midwestern winter has been brutal and Mardi Gras, Lent and Easter fall a little later than normal. Hopefully that means the weather for our annual friends’ trip to New Orleans will be a welcome escape to warmer temperatures, if only for a few days.

Mardi Gras Traditions

Mardi Gras has become a sacred time of sorts for my college girlfriends and me. We drop whatever we are doing and travel to New Orleans for a few days of catching up, parade going and – of course – eating and drinking our way through the city.

Each year we deplane and head to Zimmer’s for 10 lbs of crawfish and promptly pop a celebratory bottle of champagne. Then it’s off to the parades donning our purple, green and gold attire and lugging a well-stocked cooler stuffed with finger sandwiches, Zapp’s potato chips and homemade sangria.

We’ve learned over the years that drinking sangria and watching the parades is always a gamble. Dodging the beads, stuffed animals, doubloons and blinkies thrown from the floats is an active endeavor. We’ve had it drilled into us (quite literally) to keep your eyes on the sky unless you want to wear the sangria.

Personalized Mardi Gras Wine Tumbler Gifts

This year I had a surprise for my friends: personalized Mardi Gras wine tumblers with lids! Let the beads fly! (Why we didn’t do this years ago is beyond me. Then again, I feel like these cups have only really started to become popular.)

Of course I couldn’t bring boring plain cups. They needed to be personalized specifically for Mardi Gras. If you are looking for a Mardi Gras gift, check-out the tutorial below and leave me comments detailing your Mardi Gras traditions! Happy Mardi Gras, ya’ll!

To Make Your Personalized Mardi Gras Wine Tumblers:

Step 1: Gather your supplies

Step 2: Download fonts & upload them to Cricut

I wanted a very basic block font for this project because I felt the holographic vinyl would make the letters hard to read if the font had too much flourish. I ultimately settled on Lemon/Milk font my Ariq Sya on dafont.com*. If you’d like to use it too, here’s how to add it to Cricut Design Space:

  • Go to Dafont.com and search for the font by name (or use the link above) and click on the gray “download” button to the right of the font.
  • Once the zip file downloads to your computer, open the file and double-click on the TrueType font file to open it.
  • Then hit the “install” button at the top of the document.
  • Once the install is complete, open Cricut Design Space and select your new font from the font drop-down menu. (If you are already working in Design Space, you’ll want to refresh it or log out and back in so you can see the new font selection).

*Always double-check the licensing for the fonts you download. I am using this font for personal use and will not be selling these personalized Mardi Gras wine tumblers.

Step 3: Upload the Fleur de Lis image to your Cricut Design Space

I found this cute little fleur de lis cut file from WarmandFuzzyFactory on Etsy. This svg made it so easy to personalize each tumbler with our names. To make it yours, use the following directions:

  • Purchase and download the image from Etsy to your device
  • Next, open Cricut Design Space and in a New Project, click on the Upload button on the left sidebar.
  • Then click on the Upload Image button and then the Browse button to navigate to where you’ve saved your image.
  • Double click on the file
  • Add an image name and tags and click Save.
  • Now your image will be saved to Recently Uploaded Images under the Upload tab.
  • Finally, click on your image and hit the “Insert Images” button, which will take you back to your canvas for further manipulation.

Step 4: Adjust File and Font Sizes

Once the file is uploaded to Cricut Design Space, play around with the sizing. For my project, the final size of the fleur de lis is 2.412″ wide by 2.75″ tall.

Next you’ll want to add text (in my case, everyone’s first name) and adjust the sizing to fit your names in the sliced area.

Once you are satisfied with the design, “attach” the name to the fleur de lis image so the Cricut knows to keep the two pieced together during cutting.

Step 5: Cut, transfer & adhere

Using your Cricut, cut your project and use Cricut transfer tape to transfer the image to your wine glass.
